FULL FEATURE FILM - KATHRINA & ARTHUR
Wedding Cinematography
BUCKFAST ABBEY & BOVEY CASTLE, DEVON
What can I say? Kathrina & Arthur’s big day was. Absolutely. Incredible.
What makes a wedding day so special? Yes of course wedding venues, wedding dresses, cars and flowers all matter. But for me personally, it’s all about the people. As a wedding cinematographer I’ve had the absolute privilege of visiting so many incredible places right across Devon, the South West, and beyond. But there’s one thing that ties them all, and that’s the people. A wedding is a once in a lifetime event where a group of people from all walks of life come together to celebrate one thing. The marriage of two people and the joining of families. A commitment made by two people to stand by each other until ‘death do us part’. As someone who is fascinated by people and loves telling stories, what could be better than that?
Kathrina & Arthur’s special day was no exception. Yet another example of how the people make a wedding. Their day was full to the brim with character, sentiment and emotion. On top of that, we had two of the grandest, most awe inspiring venues the South West has to offer.
The day began at Bovey Castle, at the heart of Dartmoor in Devon. After the morning preparations we then set off on the 30 minute journey across the moors to Buckfast Abbey. I’m embarrassed to say this was my first visit to the famous Abbey, despite it being only 45 minutes or so from my home in Exeter. What an incredible building. This place is genuinely fit for a royal wedding! After a beautiful ceremony superbly officiated by the Parish Priest, it was back to Bovey Castle for the reception for some lovely sentimental speeches, incredible food, drinks, dancing, sparklers and a fireworks display.
Now to address the elephant in the room. The weather on the day was something else. In the run up to the big day, as with any wedding, we all kept a close eye on the forecast as numerous weather warnings were issued. Anyone who knows the South West of England will know that when the weather is bad, it is especially bad on Dartmoor. From the get go we experienced high winds and torrential rain which continued all day with few breaks in the weather. The prospect of a wet wedding might seem daunting for some, but Kat and Arthur absolutely took it in their stride. Laughing and joking, they totally embraced it. For me as a filmmaker, what at first seemed quite daunting actually ended up being a focal point of the day. I have had so many comments about the short preview I produced of their wedding, and how the rain actually added to it rather than took away from it. And I couldn’t agree more. The weather added so much atmosphere!
