A FANTASTIC NEW CAMERA FOR HYBRID SHOOTERS
PANASONIC LUMIX S1RII
THE BEST HYBRID MIRRORLESS CAMERA ON THE MARKET?
Panasonic has just unveiled the LUMIX S1R Mark II, a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the S1R. This new full frame mirrorless camera is designed for hybrid shooters that need top end stills photography features, along side powerful video functionality.
Key Features:
44.3-Megapixel BSI CMOS Sensor: The S1R Mark II is equipped with a 44.3MP back-side illuminated CMOS sensor, providing high-resolution imaging with improved low light performance.
Advanced Autofocus System: The camera introduces a hybrid autofocus system that combines phase detect AF (PDAF) with contrast AF, resulting in faster and more accurate focusing. It also features AI powered subject recognition for the first time, enhancing tracking of moving subjects.
High-Speed Continuous Shooting: Photographers can capture fast action with up to 40 frames per second using the electronic shutter and up to 10 fps with the mechanical shutter, a significant improvement on the predecessor.
8K Video Recording: The S1RII supports 8K video recording (8.1K to be exact) at 30 frames per second, for the first time in a LUMIX camera, catering to high resolution video production needs. Additionally, it offers 5.9K up to 60p and C4K up to 120p (with no crop!), as well as Apple ProRes RAW and ProRes 422 recording internally. I am told that RAW data output over HDMI is coming in a firmware update too, for those of us that like to record externally.
Enhanced Image Stabilisation: With improved IBIS, the camera compensates for up to eight stops, facilitating sharp handheld shots even in challenging conditions. LUMIX’ IBIS systems were already renowned and highly regarded as being possibly the best on the market, and now it just got even better. Pretty impressive, combined with an 8K sensor!
High-Resolution Stills Mode: A handheld high resolution mode allows users to capture still images up to 177 megapixels by merging multiple exposures, ideal for detailed landscape and product photography, or any shoot where super high resolution would be of benefit.
Refined Ergonomics and Design: The S1R Mark II features a lighter and more compact body compared to its predecessor. It includes a 5.76 million-dot OLED viewfinder and a three-inch articulated touchscreen LCD for flexible shooting angles.
Versatile Connectivity: The camera offers dual card slots (SD UHS-II and CFexpress Type B), a 10Gbps USB-C port, and a full-sized HDMI port, accommodating various professional workflows.
The LUMIX S1RII is priced at a frankly unbelievable £2999 in the UK. Ridiculously good value for what you’re getting and possibly the best bang for your buck you can get on the market today.
Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to produce anything specific in time for this announcement and release, however we did manage to get the camera out on a couple of client shoots over the last few days. So here’s just a bit of sample footage, for now. First impressions are super impressive and we look forward to getting to know this camera more.
As always, thanks to the guys at Panasonic for sending it over!
